Professor Peter Sever is Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and Honorary Consultant Physician at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Internationally renowned for his research in hypertension and cardiovascular disease prevention, Professor Sever is a past President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society and the European Council for Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Research. He has been a Senior Investigator for the National Institute for Health Research and has received prestigious awards including the Astra-Zeneca Award from the International Society for Hypertension and the Imperial College Medal.
Professor Sever’s research career, spanning over four decades, has shaped modern approaches to diagnosing and treating hypertension and cardiovascular risk. He was Co-Chief Investigator of major international clinical trials such as the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT), contributing key evidence on blood pressure and lipid management for the prevention of heart disease and stroke. With over 500 peer-reviewed publications, he remains a leader in clinical pharmacology, translational science, and multi-risk factor interventions for vascular disease.
Prof Sever’s focus is on blood pressure variability, demonstrating that the variability of blood pressure over days, weeks and months is a powerful predictor of future heart attacks and strokes and may be even more important than average levels of blood pressure. His is proposing to identify blood pressure variability as a new paradigm in blood pressure management and working using technologies including AI to identify individuals with high variability at increased risk of future cardiovascular disease. These studies together with a new global educational programme in hypertension have been supported by FFCH.
