Professor Ian Wilkinson is professor of Theraputics at the University of Cambridge, Honoury Consultant Physician at cambridge University hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Director of the Cambridge Clinical trials Unit. Internationally recognised for his expertise in hypertension and cardiovascular physiology. Professor Wilkinson’s work has inspired major advances in arterial haemodynamics and translational clinical research. He has played leading roles in defining the mechamisms underlying hypertension and vascular disease and has shaped national guidelines for cardiovascular prevention and management.
After completing medical training at oxford, and specialist training in Oxford and Edinburgh, professor Wilkinson took up a lectureship and consultant post in Cambridge in 2000. He currently leads experimental and translational research initiatives, including multi-centre clinical trials focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and cardiovascular disease across diverse populations. Professor Wilkinson is President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society, and is deeply engaged in medical education and mentoring, helping develop the next generation of clinical researchers.
professor Wilkinson leads the MRC/BHF-funded AIMHY-INFORM trial, a landmark study to determine the most effective antihypertensive strategies for different ethnic groups in the UK. This work aims to guide precision medicine and reduce disparities in cardiovascular care.
Another focus is the POPPY Study, which investigates why hypertension in pregnancy elevates long-term cardiovascular risk. Professor Wilkinson’s group is pioneering research into both mechanisms and optimal treatments for these populations.
His group explores clinical value and haemodynamic biomarkers, noninvasive vascular imaging, and the impact of novel drugs on endothelial function. Collaborations with industry partners and academic centres advance the developmet or personalised approaches for aterial disease.
