Professor Neil Poulter is Professor of Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine at Imperial College London and Co-Director of the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit. He is an Honorary Consultant Physician at Hammersmith Hospital, actively involved in clinical care and research focused on hypertension and cardiovascular disease prevention. Early in his career, he led important international studies including the Kenyan Luo migration study, which established the role of sodium intake in blood pressure increases with urbanization, and the WHO oral contraceptive study evaluating cardiovascular risk.
Professor Poulter qualified at St Mary’s Hospital, London, and trained in General Medicine before spending five years coordinating hypertension research in Kenya. Since his appointment as Professor at Imperial in 1997, he has been instrumental in national and international clinical trials such as ASCOT and ADVANCE, contributing critical evidence to clinical guidelines on blood pressure and diabetes management. He has published over 650 peer-reviewed articles and is recognized among the top cited clinical medicine researchers globally.
